When I saw that this week’s I Heart Faces theme would be “fun at the beach,” I have to admit that I wasn’t sure I wanted to participate. I’ve over-pimped my summer vacation photos, so I really didn’t want to re-share one of those photos for the umpteenth time.

Then, last night, I took a trip down memory road and started going through some of my travel photo archives. When I first started my “day job,” I traveled all over the world – as far as Hawaii and Maui one direction…and as far as Dubai the other direction.
The above photo was taken during my second trip to Hawaii. One of my coworkers and I went to a lu’au where they served an incredible meal on the beach and then entertained us with hours of dancing and singing. It was really remarkable. While there, I learned of the Imu which is a Hawaiian Underground Oven (traditionally, the pig was cooked in an underground pit and served in plaited baskets made of coconut fronds or on large banana leaves. The shredded pork was just as tender and moist as a pork butt roasted in an electric or gas oven. The word kalua refers to the process of cooking in an earth oven).
Looking back on the photos, I recall how ceremonial this meal was…and it was definitely some of the most fun I’ve had at the beach!
