Selfie Saturday: Arm’s Length
Is it just me or are you learning so much from Elena’s Selfie Saturday tutorials?  Considering that this week’s Shoot and Edit Photo Challenge theme is Couples or Self-Portraits, I’ve been spending a lot of time lately thinking about how to better set up my shots. I’m sure that Jill will have even more tips for us on Monday – although I’m not  looking forward to sharing a SOOC shot.

Last week’s lesson was all about arm’s length self-portraits or as someone so eloquently called them, the “MySpace” photo. My sister is the master of the arm’s length selfie. I won’t link up her Facebook profile, but I can promise you that it’s filled with these types of shots. She’s even managed to get my mom and dad in the frame with her on occasion.

Anyways, after reading Elena’s tutorial this week, I was prepared to give it a try. In fact, I even spent a little extra time on my eye make up.

My original intent was to use the trees along the walking trail behind our office buildings  as my backdrop (Tamron 28-75mm f/3.2 using Aperture Priority Mode). Although I got one shot worth sharing, I felt like my lighting was off because I kept squinting…and what’s with the smirk on my face? I tried again from a different angle, but I lost my pretty background (actually…that’s not completely true – you’ll see two more shots from this session next week). So, I got in my car and drove over to a space that provided a nice clean background.

Granted this is the completely edited version, but it’s what I think I look like…does that make sense? There are times where I look at myself in the mirror and think, “yeah girl, you got it going on,” and then a picture is taken of me and I think, “gosh, I look horrible!” Thanks to Photoshop, I can recreate the image I see in the mirror.

By the way, can you tell I’m experimenting with my processing? I recently purchased Florabella’s Luxe II collection. I haven’t quite found my favorite recipe, but I’m enjoying them. Also, as a result of getting third place in The Paper Mama‘s Valentine’s Photo/Card challenge…I won a $75 gift certificate to The Album Cafe. Since I don’t do much in the way of photo albums or large scale collages, I purchased several “blog-it” sets. I think they’re kinda fun to change things up every once in a while.

With that said, check out more arm’s length selfies at:

    SUCH a cute selfie!! :)

Aww they’re both great! I deleted all mine, lol. But I’m definitely learning a lot from Elena!!

You’re so pretty!!! And I am hoping to link up to selfie saturday, too! And yes, great processing!! You will LOVE Florabella’s actions. They are seriously incredible!

Ashley, I completely know what you mean about a picture looking like how you think you look, lol! These are great shots.

B.E.A.UTIFUL! I might have to play along with these Selfie Saturdays… hmmm….

    you are so adorable!

I love the top picture. I think it looks like you have a fun secret to tell your bestie! It’s a keeper!

You´re so pretty, I love it! I suck at taking photos like this, maybe I´ll give it a go soon… or maybe not, haha! :-D

both are very lovely but I like the second one better though. the light is much better and the detail is more clear.
    Nice shots!
    Mira

I love that second shot, you look so pretty and natural and self assured and you are very good at these selfies!

    very pretty

    I like the second best.

If I may give you a piece of advice, watch out for the fish eye effect.

Wonderful arms length self portrait Ashley. As hard as I try I ams length is one shot I can’t capture. I think my arms are too short :)

i really love the second one. i love the frames :-) great job!

    have a great weekend!
    jill

Pretty shots :) You make it look effortless.

LOVE those dark eyes. Wonderful selfie!

LOVELY selfies!!! And YES, I am learning SO MUCH from her tutorials!! I love them!!

these are great, I will have to try this..

These are really cute pictures…so fresh and happy. I think I would need to use a blur filter on my own face at that length! LOL!

    You´re so pretty women!
    Kisses and happy weekend.

    Such a pretty young lady!

GAH. You’re gonna make me wanna do this one since I’m already planning a self-portrait this weekend for Monday anyway.

Beautiful, girl! You got it going on!

    Clickin’ over for details….

I am HORRIBLE at the self taken arm shots…omg, like really bad! I should check out that tutorial. We should practice Sunday for kicks and giggles…it is much easier with a point and shoot because they are lighter for one handling. ;0.

You are beautimous! You remind me of a gal I went to HS with and she is also beautimous;0

These are so great! Wonderful edits too!

The first shot was done at a wider angle, so your face looks a bit weird. and shooting from the top makes it look more like an arm’s length shot.
However the second one is PERFECT. Your face looks beautiful and true to life, you have a nice close crop, the light is great and if i didn’t know I’d never guess it was an arm’s length, which is exactly what we were shooting for!
    GREAT JOB, girl!

Such a cutie Ashley. It would take a lot of processing to get the wrinkles out of this old face. Not going to try one of those techniques any time soon. LOL. V

Just sneaking in to get the scavenger hunt items…..gonna get them all today!!!! Love your selfies!!!! Happy Saturday!

So pretty! My favorite is the first one, coloring and all.

Those eyes. You are beautiful lady!

Great shots Ashley! And I do like the processing and formatting.

Great shots. I’m hoping to take a good self portrait eventually. Lol.

I really like that first one – it just feels warm. And we could use some warmth here in Nebraska. :/

SUCH a cute selfie!! :-) I’m horrible at self photos…glad to see someone has them mastered!

Just gorgeous self portraits, and I like what you said about using photoshop to recreate what you see in the mirror, so true (for me anyway).

I love your selfies! I actually like the squinty one. I love feel of the photo. You actually made me wanna jump in on the selife Saturday link up, cause i need the practice!

Sooooo cute! I love it! I had to laugh because we joked about that before…in my head I’m like “oh yeah!”…and I look in the mirror and it’s “oh NO!” Story of my life. But YOU are super adorably cute – you lucky lil’ thing! ♥

great photo, you have such pretty eyes (hopefully that didn’t sound too creepy;P)

    As always, just wonderful!

Okay…I love that second shot and girl, you DO got it goin’ on! :)

Beautiful!! absolutely LOVE the second one!! But you are beautiful!

The second one is great! :D

I’m not a fan of the selfie… but maybe I’ll give it a shot for S&E next week. ;)

How fun! I just did a self-portrait and didn’t even know about this selfie saturdays group! :) I totally understand what you mean about thinking this is what you really look like. I think we can all relate to that :) Your pics are super cute, great job!

    Wonderful selfies. They look great.

beautiful! i haven’t had a chance to try this yet! yours came out great!

These selfies are beautiful. I read through the tutorial you linked and I will have to give this a try.

My younger sis is a pro at these too! Dozens and dozens of “Facebook” style pics :) You look great by the way – Photoshop or not! And congrats on the win! Album Cafe has a long of cool “blog it boards” that I like to use every now and then.
