Christmas with Lukas
Christmas with Lukas
The other morning, I met up with Lukas for a holiday portrait session at the Arboretum.

It’s been a while since I last photographed Lukas – as in Felicity came with me to my last shoot and stayed on my hip the entire time kinda while.

Much has changed since then. For one, Lukas is willing to stand or sit…and SMILE. And beautiful smiles at that. Such beautiful smiles that I had an incredibly hard time choosing favorites.

But I managed to choose a few that were worthy of sharing with the world, and now I pass the tough job of choosing the best of the best onto his mother. I am absolutely certain that there are many worth printing…and at least one or two worth printing on canvas. Just say’n.

I don’t know if it’s worth mentioning, but I’m not sure that you can tell that it was about 30 degrees out on the day we were shooting. I can hardly tell by these pictures that Lukas was ever cold. I guess his Swedish blood is keeping him warm.

During this session, I was also reminded of why I love photographing children. I love love love photographing one child at a time. Not that I don’t love photographing families (and I’ve been doing that A LOT the past few weeks), but to be with one child is pretty special.

Sure it takes a little while for the kid to “warm up,” (pun intended) but at some point, the kid will lower their guard and let their personality shine.

It’s in these moments that I capture some of my silliest shots. On the other hand, I usually capture my best “mom” shots in the first 10 minutes…you know, the ones where the child is looking and smiling at the camera.

In Lukas’ case, he was completely tired of taking photos. We were at the back of the arboretum and he was DONE. We (his mom and I) would say, just one more. And I try really hard to stick to my promises, but a few places just screamed at me. So, what does he do? He sticks out his tongue.

I actually love it.

In other cases, this little gem comes through. All in a day’s work.

Chris – I hope you love these photos as much as I do. I look forward to seeing you and Lukas (and the rest of your sweet family) soon!
